Thermal / Ignition Barrier

Cost efficient way to meet fire code over foam plastic insulations

Like most organic materials, spray foam does possess a combustible nature. For this reason, both the International Building Code (IBC) & International Residential Code (IRC) require a thermal barrier to separate the foam from interior living spaces and protect occupants in case of a fire. A thermal barrier is a material applied between the spray foam and interior spaces and is designed to delay temperature rise and prevent or delay the foam's contribution to the fire. Approved thermal barriers are described in the IBC and IRC as having a fire-resistance rating equal to ½” gypsum wallboard. Ignition Barriers are sometimes allowed in attics and crawlspaces that afford access but are not considered living spaces, the protection criteria for Ignition barriers are slightly less than that of thermal barriers. In areas where a prescriptive ½ drywall board is not used, United Spray can provide equivalent barrier coatings in the form of Intumescent Paint and Sprayed Cellulose Insulation.
